Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch and his band Ronin grabbed the attention of the international jazz world with four acclaimed ECM recordings between 2006 and 2012. The group's trademark sound lies in minimal, polyrhythmic grooves thatBärtsch defines as zen funk. But Ronin’s roots lie in Mobile  an earlier Bärtsch’s ensemble founded in 1997. The composer's approach is slightly different but his genius is evident in both groups, in their ability to take simple figures and play really sophisticated music. The repetitive figures, the rhythmic patterns and modulations push this music into innovative territory. That Bärtsch can apply this innovation so effectively with a basic combo and even with a string section in his Mobile Extended, with the magic new album, « Continuum », further validates the soundness of his unique approach. The music consists of very few phrases and motives, continually combined, layered and amalgamated into a coherent new style, particularly impressive in Mobile’s spectacular live performances.
