Natif de New-York, Nasheet Waits marque très jeune un intérêt pour jouer de la batterie, encouragé par son père, percussionniste légendaire, Frederick Waits. Pendant ses études à l'Université de Long Island, Nasheet Waits a étudié en privé avec le percussionniste de renom Michael Carvin. C’est Max Roach qui offre la première scène internationale à Nasheet. Après Antonio Hart, Nasheet Waits a rejoint les groupes de Andrew Hill et Fred Hersch. Plus récemment, Nasheet Waits s’est retrouvé à être lui-même chef de file en formant deux nouveaux collectifs, « Equality » & « Tarbaby ». « Equality » est né d’une tournée printanière en Italie en 2007. La discographie de Nasheet commence à compter dans le monde du jazz et on le retrouve aussi aux côtés de  Jackie McLean, Stanley Cowell, David Murray, Eddie Gomez, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Peter Brötzmann, Miroslav Vitous, Geri Allen et Ralph Alessi. Batteur parmi les plus influents du jazz actuel, Nasheet Waits s’inscrit dans l’évolution d’un jeu de batterie plein, subtil, fougueux, bien en dehors des codes d’accompagnement traditionnels. Il alimente le flux musical par un jeu reposant sur un usage complexe de la polyrythmie.

Nasheet Waits’ interest in playing the drums was encouraged by his father, the legendary percussionist  Frederick Waits. Nasheet  graduated with honors, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Music from  Long Island University. Reinforcing his credentials as a bandleader, Nasheet Waits developped a flair for straight-ahead jazz and avant-garde categories but moves with equal confidence in post and neo-bop styles. Past collaborations include Antonio Hart, Mark Turner, Andrew Hill, Fred Hersch, David Murray, Jason Moran, Ron Carter, Jackie McLean and Steve Lehman, while more recently, his groundbreaking drumming techniques were put at the service of Logan Richardson, Miroslav Vitous, Avishai Cohen, Tony Malaby. He leads the completely renewed quartet Equality. Nasheet Waits unwraps an extraordinary body of work that serves as a showcase for his vibrant driving grooves and impeccable compositions. True to his personal philosophy of the necessity to balance Tradition and Modernism, Waits collaborates and performs regularly with a wide range of artists.
