CARLA BLEY TRIO

Carla Bley est une figure essentielle de la scène jazz tout en restant une de ces personnalités les plus fantaisistes et iconoclastes. Pianiste, compositrice, arrangeuse, la musicienne américaine intègre dans un patchwork habile et éclairé un ensemble de références éclectiques, populaires et savantes, avec un sens du drame et de l’humour qui rend son univers musical extrêmement personnel. En quarante ans de carrière, cette digne héritière de Charles Mingus, Gil Evans et Duke Ellington, a transformé le concept du big band. Son trio, en fait un big band aux dimensions réduites, célèbre sur scène un jazz délicat et intimiste, soudé par une belle amitié, et le concert est toujours un grand moment de folle intelligence et de beauté. Il en résulte une élégance sonore fondée sur une façon quasi organique de jouer ensemble. Le grand bassiste Steve Swallow fait partie de ses diverses formations depuis 1978 et Andy Sheppard, un des plus importants saxophonistes actuels, l’accompagne de façon régulière depuis 1987.

One of the most important jazz composers of the last 50 years, Carla Bley has written music for big bands, choirs, chamber orchestras, and small combos. Her work demonstrates a wide compositional range as well as a healthy sense of humour. Bley’s skills have been in demand even outside of jazz, including performing and recording with Robert Wyatt, and Pink Floyd’s drummer Nick Mason. She wrote compositions for her first husband Paul Bley, and great jazzmen such as Art Farmer, Jimmy Giuffre and Tony Williams. With her second husband Michael Mantler, she formed the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra. Among the awards bestowed upon Bley are a Guggenheim Fellowship for music composition (1972), the German Jazz Trophy "A Life for Jazz" (2009), and honorary doctorates from l’Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail (2012) and the New England Conservatory (2014). In 2016 she received the renowned NEA Jazz Masters for her outstanding career. On her newest album for ECM, with the faihful companions Steve Swallow and Andy Sheppard, she progresses in sophisticated chamberlike pieces suffused with melancholy and almost philosophical music lines.
