RITA MARCOTULLI -
EUROPEAN LEADERS

The arrival of Rita Marcotulli on Italy’s jazz scene was a singular event. She is the most important figure of the ‘in-between’ generation of Italian jazz and has built an independent career. All of her personal and innovating style has been broadened with the all-star project « European Leaders » which aims to create a new language in European-style jazz. After her first steps in jazz alongside Roberto Gatto and Flavio Boltro, she played for two years in Billy Cobham’s band. Collaborating with such great jazzmen as Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Kenny Wheeler a.o., she came into contact with the dynamic Scandinavian jazz scene, above all with Palle Danielsson, Anders Jormin and Jon Christensen, but also with Joe Lovano or Pat Metheny. She worked with the great Dewey Redman for fifteen years. Her style has become amazingly profound, as she explores unusual sounds in her artful arrangements. She plays often with Andy Sheppard in what is certainly one of the best duos on the international jazz scene. All five musicians have been leaders of their own bands for many years.
