De formation classique, Michel Reis s’est reconverti dans le jazz et la musique improvisée. Après six ans d’études au Berklee College of Music et au New England Conservatory, il s’est forgé une solide réputation. Actuellement basé à New York, il est régulièrement en tournée aux Etats-Unis, en Europe, en Amérique centrale et au Japon. Si son jeu se réclame implicitement de celui d’un Thelonius Monk ou d’un Joachim Kühn, il n’en demeure pas moins ouvert à l’évolution actuelle du jazz et puise au plus profond dans son inspiration poétique personnelle. Reis s'attache toujours dans ses compositions à créer une atmosphère puisant dans des dimensions lyriques profondes, tout en reposant sur l’improvisation, le rythme et l’énergie d'un groupe de jazz moderne. Il se produit sur la scène de « Like a Jazz Machine » avec ses deux quartets, allemand et japonais, ce qui lui permet, avec deux approches et modes d’expression différents, de tirer tous les registres de son grand talent.

Pianist and composer Michel R­eis started his musical training at an early age. He began studying at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, and moved to Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. Reis studied, worked and performed a.o. with Joe Lovano, Danilo Perez, Dave Holland, Esperanza Spalding. Currently based in New York City, Michel Reis has performed in many of the world’s most famous jazz clubs and festivals, including the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Knitting Factory, the Panama Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Reis and his German quartet explore with both energy and lyricism a peculiar and fascinating musical universe. Michel Reis Japanese quartet’s free approach to improvisation makes room for a new kind of immediately appealing musical expression. Reis’ piano performance, though melodic in its core, leads the quartet with a hammering impulse into a tight and tense interplay culminating in an exciting outburst of pure energy and beauty.
