You Matter

The Julie Campiche Quartet have returned with their sophomore album ‘You Matter’. An experimental body of work, avant-garde jazz that has the magical, unexpected and emotive sounds of the harp at its core, with a compelling and hopeful message to the world around themes of climate change, refugee crisis, the patriarchy and human identity in these dark and troubled times.
The quartet has established a highly developed mutual rapport and a highly distinctive group that sound that is essentially unique.

“You Matter” represents a very natural follow up and addresses similar themes, as Campiche explains in her liner notes;
“Things related to community and how we live our lives inform my vision of the world. Intentionally or not everything we do contributes to our interdependence. As a musician it is vital that my art weaves itself into the very fabric of our life together on this earth. Music is the door to imagination, where my dreams move freely beyond the confines of reason. Such dreams give rise to powerful creative emotions that enable me to transform my reality and live my dreams. May my music help you to connect with your own dreams and find the strength to fulfil them. Because your dreams matter. Because our dreams are the key to tomorrow”.

Campiche’s commitment to the environmental cause finds expression in a thank you to the young climate activist Greta Thunberg - “whose energy, tenacity and integrity are a constant source of inspiration and hope”. The track “Fridays of Hope” also incorporates a sample of a Thunberg speech.

Campiche’s music embraces the sounds of jazz, classical, Middle Eastern music and electronica. Her quartet draws inspiration from such musicians as Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and the UK’s own Portico Quartet. She also cites the influence of the ECM sound in general, and Keith Jarrett in particular, but also artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Portishead, Ahmad Jamal and Arvo Part. She also emphasises the importance of space within her music, plus a strong sense of narrative.

Das Julie Campiche Quartett ist mit seinem zweiten Album »You Matter« zurück. Avantgarde-Jazz vom feinsten. Im Mittelpunkt die magischen, unerwarteten und gefühlvollen Klänge der in Musikwelten selten vertretenen Harfe.

»You Matter« steht für Hoffnung, für eine visionäre und überzeugende Botschaft an die Welt mit all ihren Krisen, Herausforderungen und Aufgaben zu den Themen Klimawandel, Flüchtlingskrise, Patriarchat und menschlicher Identität. Es ist auch der Versuch, etwas Licht in diese dunklen und unruhigen Zeiten zu kriegen. Seit jeher ist es der Bandleaderin, Harfenistin, Komponistin, Sängerin und Produzentin elektronischer Musik Julie Campiche ein Anliegen, ihre Gedanken über das Weltgeschehen mit musikalischer Innovation zu vereinen. Hier gehen Jazz, Klassik, Elektronik, Avantgarde-Experimente und politische Botschaften Hand in Hand. Subtil und freundlich, aber bestimmt. Und deswegen schon öfters in Düdelingen zu Gast gewesen. Zuletzt im vorherigen Jahr im Rahmen von Acoustic Picnics. Campiches Pionierarbeit im Bereich des Harfenjazz ist bemerkenswert und international anerkannt.

In der Kombination mit dem Saxofonisten Leo Fumagalli, dem Kontrabassisten Manu Hagmann und dem Schlagzeuger Clemens Kuratle gelingt der experimentellen Jazzband unter der Führung von Campiche eine eindringliche Verletzlichkeit und unverwechselbare Klangwelt.

Manu Hagmann

Manu Hagmann ist ein angesehener, viel gebuchter Schweizer Kontrabassist, der für seine technische Affinität und Musikalität bekannt ist. Er spielt in zahlreichen Projekten mit und tourt international mit verschiedenen Formationen. Seit 2011 ist er der Bassist vom FLORIAN FAVRE TRIO, mit Florian Favre (Klavier, Komposition), Arthur Alard (Schlagzeug) welchem er international unterwegs ist und bereits drei Alben herausgebracht hat. Seit 2016 spielt Manu im Julie Campiche Quartett mit Leo Fumagalli (Tenorsaxophon), Julie Campiche (Harfe), Clemens Kuratle (Schlagzeug) mit, welche 2020 mit Meta Records «Onkalo» herausgebracht haben. Weitere Alben auf denen Manu Hagmann mitgespielt hat sind mit der Big Band de Suisse Romande «Big Band Theory», Orioxy «Lost Children» und «The other strangers», Trionyx «Tack Time», Jean-Lou Treboux Group «Paths», Fabio Pinto «Metamorphosis», Red Planet «L’impatience», Swing Session «Leapfrog», Fun Skider «Live». Seit 2016 spielt Manu mit seinem eigenen Projekt MANU HAGMANN’S CHOICE mit Zacharie Ksyk (Trompete), Louis Billette (Tenor Saxofon), René. Mosele (Posaune) et Alberto Garcia (Perkussion)2008 gewann Manu Hagmann den «Lauréat du tremplin jazz de la Fondation 2 » des « Montreux Jazz Festival » mit RED PLANET 2000. 2011 und 2013 folgte der « Grand Prix du Jury du Tremplin » von « Jazz International d’Avignon (F) » mit der Band ORIOXY, sowie der « Credit Suisse Jazz-Preis » am Festival der Stanser Musiktage.2016 durfte Manu Hagmann den «Grand Prix Albert Michiels» für die Sparte «beste Interpretation» und «bester Bassist» am «Internationale B- Jazz (BE)» mit dem Florian Favre Trio, entgegen nehmen.

Experimental jazz harpist, vocalist, composer, electronic producer and bandleader Julie Campiche’s musical language is an on-going process of combining her thoughts on the world with musical innovation, spanning jazz, classical, electronic and avant-garde experimentation to infuse her music with an urgent fragility. Early in her career, Julie pioneered the style of harp jazz, seeing the jazz, classical and contemporary music scenes develop into one which is now hugely diverse and experimental for harpists. Julie introduced her harp into the world of jazz and contem- porary music in a very organic way. She now performs in numerous European clubs and festivals on a regular basis. Through her innate curiosity and desire for new experience she plays with groups that have diverse instrumentation and esthetics. She has played with musicians such as Malcolm Braff, Jasper Hoiby, Andreas Schaerer, to name only a few.

Clemens Curatle about himself: I was Born in Bern, Switzerland in 1991 and started playing the drums at the age of 6. After highschool I studied with Gerry Hemingway, Norbert Pfammatter and Pierre Favre and then quickly managed to find my way into the small but thriving swiss music scene. Good technique is mandatory, and I want to keep reaching. Still, I often find myself playing quite sparse, delicate acoustic settings, trying to really hear everything and get everything heard. I draw my inspiration from my countless peers and from music from all over the world, be it the drummers of Burundi, indonesian gamelan, gnawa music from Morroco or the intriguing female choirs of Bulgaria as well as the manifold fusions encounters create. I lead the critically acclaimed quintet Murmullo, and the international ensemble Ydivide. My work with the quartet of harpist Julie Campiche probably drew the most attention in recent years. Swiss Bitwig wizard Guy Mandon has opened my ears for synthetic sounds and more electronic-oriented music. I joined him for his live set. I am a longtime member and arranger for neo-folk outlaw Moes Anthill and recently started working intensively for and with Kate Birch.Leo Fumagalli ??
